Find treble-clef notes from staff landmarks

New to this clef? Start with Treble Clef Notes: Landmarks, Lines and Spaces. Broader practice: this quiz also includes ledger lines, accidentals and key signatures. The checks on this lesson stay within its five lines and four spaces; learn the extra signs before attempting the full quiz.

The treble clef marks G on the second line from the bottom. Move one line or space at a time through the letter names A to G: the bottom line is E, the middle line is B, and the top line is F. After G the letters repeat.

A key signature or an accidental may change the pitch without moving the notehead. Name the staff letter first, then apply any sharp, flat or natural that affects it.

How to work it out

  1. Start at a nearby known line and count each adjacent space and line to the notehead.
  2. Read the key signature at the start of the staff and any accidental directly before the note.

Worked example

A note is on the middle treble line in a key with no sharps or flats. What letter is it?

From second-line G, move through space A to third-line B. The middle-line note is B natural.

Watch for this mistake

A note on the top line is F, not G. In a one-sharp key signature that same top-line note becomes F sharp.

Watch first

Stop counting lines: read treble clef with 3 landmarks

Learn middle C, treble G and top F, then read any nearby note by stepping line, space, line from the closest landmark.
